Frequently Asked Questions
Hotlink 4G LTE - General
-
LTE (an abbreviation for Long Term Evolution) is the latest technology in the mobile network evolution that provides users with much faster speeds comparing to 3G.
HSPA+ is an enhancement that offers faster data speeds on the 3G network.
In Malaysia, 4G and LTE are used in the same manner. Different devices display it differently. -
Depends on what you use your LTE for. For most of the situations - whether it’s messaging and calling via WhatsApp, video streaming on Facebook, GPS navigation on Waze, or loading pages on Google Chrome – 4G uses the similar amount of data as 3G. But as 4G is faster, information loads quicker on your device. General tendency would be to view more content within the same period of time.
There are some exceptions where 4G would consume more data than 3G. For example, on YouTube, 4G users get HD videos by default. With the better resolution and experience, comes a little more consumption of your mobile internet.

There may be many reasons to this.
It might be that your internet pass has been fully depleted. You can check it by logging into the MyMaxis App.If you still have remaining quota, check whether other Maxis users within the same area are facing the same slow network issue.
If not, check your data settings, whether it is set to 4G enabled, or accidentally switched to 2G/3G only.If yes, it might be due to network congestion, where too many users are on the same network within the same area. It might also be a shortage. Please reach out to our 4G ambassadors to highlight the network shortage and our network experts will get on it straight away.

Each radio technology (3G vs 4G) has different coverage radius, i.e. 4G radius is three quarter size of a 3G radius. As much as we want to cover the whole place, inch by inch, with 4G, it’s challenging for us to do so. Sometimes it is inevitable to have a small area “corner of the house” which is covered by 3G and not 4G.
-
There are more 3G towers than 4G towers. We have over 88% of population coverage for 3G, while our 4G population coverage is just slightly above 40%. But rest assured, Maxis is the fastest growing 4G LTE network in Malaysia. As we roll out more 4G towers, you’ll see more of yourself being on 4G.
-
Not true. In fact, since 4G LTE has been introduced, many manufacturers has improved their device’s power management including larger battery capacity & a more energy efficient baseband radio processor that will handle 4G LTE network without draining your phone’s battery. If battery is draining fast, you can decrease the screen brightness, manually shut the apps which are running at the background, or use applications like Juice Defender.

No there is no price difference; we offer you the best network when you pay for your internet data pass. You’ll be on 4G if you fulfill all of the below:
- You are using a LTE enabled device
- You have a valid Mobile Internet Pass (whether 100MB or 2GB, as long as you have high speed quota)
- You have an LTE-enabled SIM (Any sim card above 64K supports 4G. Just need to check whether your SIM is 32k, 64k or 128k from the front of your SIM card)
- You have turned on LTE on your mobile device setting
- You are within LTE coverage area
So wait no more and switch to Maxis 4G LTE!

4G LTE offers better experience for all types of data applications.
Internet necessity: Less than 4 seconds to load web pages; faster download of images in social chat apps
Entertainment: Seamless video streaming on YouTube or iFlix; non-stop music streaming on Spotify Premium; smoother gaming experience.
Productivity: Fast upload of documents onto cloud storage, file downloads,
Communication: Video calls with less lag
There are apps which can only function well with 4G, such as Meerkat, Periscope, Stringwire and more.
